- Pressure adjustment mechanism — The pressure knob or screw should turn smoothly through a genuine range. Test by adjusting from minimum to maximum — you should feel a clear progression of resistance
- Hinge and arm quality — The arm should open and stay open without drooping. On a swing-away, the swing mechanism should be smooth and stay in the open position without being pushed back toward the platen
Step 5: Verify Temperature Accuracy with an Infrared Thermometer
If possible, test the machine before buying by placing an infrared thermometer (pyrometer) on the centre and four corners of the heated platen. The readings should be within 5°C of each other and within 10°C of the set temperature. Machines with hot spots or cold spots near the edges will produce inconsistent transfers — particularly problematic for edge-to-edge designs.
