Sublimation and Heat Press: Why They Are Inseparable
Sublimation printing is a two-stage process. Stage one is printing your design onto sublimation transfer paper using sublimation inks. Stage two is applying the printed paper to the substrate with a heat press, where heat causes the sublimation inks to convert from solid to gas, penetrating and permanently bonding with the substrate’s molecules. Without the heat press, the sublimation ink remains inert on the paper. The heat press is what makes sublimation happen.
For sublimation specifically, the heat press must be capable of sustaining higher temperatures (190°C–210°C) for longer periods (45–300 seconds depending on substrate) than DTF or HTV applications. Not all heat presses are equally well-suited for sublimation work — particularly mug sublimation, which requires consistent temperature across a cylindrical heating element for 3–4 minutes.
Substrates That Can Be Sublimated with a Heat Press
Fabrics (Flat Heat Press)
- 100% polyester — sublimation bonds perfectly to polyester fibres, producing full-saturation, wash-permanent colour
- Polyester blend (80%+ poly) — acceptable results; colours slightly less saturated than 100% poly
- Polyester-coated cotton (special sublimation-coated cotton) — allows sublimation onto cotton but at reduced saturation
- Cotton, linen, denim — cannot be sublimated (no polyester fibres for the dye to bond with)
Hard Substrates (Flat or Vacuum Heat Press)
- Sublimation-coated ceramic mugs — mug press required
- Sublimation-coated aluminium photo panels — flat press
- Sublimation-coated MDF and wood products — flat press

Preventing Ghosting in Sublimation — Uganda’s Most Common Problem
Ghosting in sublimation printing occurs when the sublimation paper shifts slightly during the press cycle, causing a double-image or shadow effect on the finished product. It is the most reported sublimation quality problem in Uganda’s printing businesses.
Causes of Ghosting:
- Paper not secured to the substrate before pressing
- Garment or substrate shifting when the press closes
- Garment removed from the press while the paper is still attached and hot, then moved before peeling
- Air pockets under the paper bulging when the press closes and shifting the paper
Solutions:
- Always secure sublimation paper with heat-resistant tape on all four sides before pressing
- For garments, use a heat-resistant spray adhesive on the back of the sublimation paper to lightly tack it in position before taping
- After the press opens, keep the garment and paper stationary on the lower platen while peeling
- Work on a flat, stable lower platen surface — a loose or warped lower pad causes garment movement when pressed
Colour Management for Sublimation in Uganda
Sublimation colours on the finished product depend on the ICC colour profile used in your printer driver and the specific sublimation ink set. If your printed mugs and fabric look washed out or show wrong hues compared to your screen design, the issue is colour profile mismatch. Steps to correct:
- Install the ICC colour profile specific to your ink brand and paper type (download from the ink manufacturer’s website)
- In your design software (Photoshop, CorelDRAW, Canva), export in sRGB colour space
- In the printer driver, select the installed ICC profile and disable any automatic colour correction
- Print a test on standard sublimation paper and press onto a white polyester test piece to verify colours before doing client jobs
Pre-Pressing (Blanking) Fabric Before Sublimation
Before sublimating a polyester garment, pre-press it blank (without paper or transfer) for 3–5 seconds at your sublimation temperature. This removes moisture and wrinkles from the fabric, creating a flat, dry surface for the transfer. Moisture trapped in the fabric during sublimation creates steam bubbles that can cause incomplete transfer and blotchy results.
