DTF and the Heat Press: A Critical Partnership
DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing has become Uganda’s dominant garment decoration method in 2026 — but the quality of the final pressed garment depends equally on the DTF print and on the heat press application. Even a perfect DTF print will peel, fade, or fail if pressed at wrong settings, on a poorly calibrated machine, or with incorrect technique.
This guide focuses entirely on the heat press side of DTF production: correct settings, peel techniques, fabric-specific adjustments, and how to troubleshoot the most common DTF pressing failures in Uganda.
How DTF Transfers Bond to Fabric
A DTF transfer film consists of three layers: the ink layer (the design), the hot-melt adhesive powder layer, and the PET carrier film. During pressing, heat melts the hot-melt adhesive, which flows into and bonds with the fabric fibres. When the film cools and you peel the carrier, the bonded ink and adhesive remain permanently attached to the fabric.
For this process to work correctly, the adhesive must reach its melt point (typically 120°C–150°C depending on the powder used) and the press must apply sufficient uniform pressure to drive the melted adhesive into the fabric weave. This is why temperature, time, and pressure all matter — and why a machine with cold spots or inaccurate temperature readout produces inconsistent results.

Hot Peel vs Cold Peel DTF Films
DTF transfer films are manufactured as either hot-peel or cold-peel type. The difference significantly affects the final result and the pressing workflow:
Hot Peel DTF Film
- Peel the carrier film immediately after the press opens, while the garment is still hot
- Result: Slightly glossy, vibrant finish
- Advantage: Fast workflow — no waiting between cycles
- Risk: If you wait too long before peeling, the adhesive re-sets and the film may partially lift the design when peeled
Cold Peel DTF Film
- Allow the garment to cool for 30–60 seconds (or fully to room temperature) before peeling the carrier
- Result: Softer, matte or satin finish — feels more like printed fabric
- Advantage: Less risk of peeling errors; softer hand feel preferred for premium garments
- Risk: Slower workflow if you are doing high-volume pressing
How to identify your film type: Check the packaging label. If unlabelled (common with imported DTF film sold in Uganda), test with a small piece — if clean hot peel is possible, it is hot-peel film; if the hot peel causes lifting, it is cold-peel film.
The Double-Press Technique for DTF
For superior DTF wash durability — particularly on garments that will be washed frequently — use a double-press technique:
- First press: Full settings (e.g., 160°C, 15 seconds, medium pressure) with the carrier film in place. Peel carrier immediately (hot peel) or after cooling (cold peel).
- Cover with a silicone sheet or parchment paper
- Second press: 160°C, 5–8 seconds, medium pressure, directly over the transferred design
The second press fully re-melts and bonds any adhesive that may not have penetrated completely in the first press, significantly improving wash durability.
Pressing DTF on Seams, Zips, and Uneven Areas
When pressing DTF transfers across seams, zippers, or button plackets, the pressure is uneven — the raised seam gets more pressure than the flat area beside it, causing incomplete bonding in the lower areas. Solutions:
- Use a silicone pillow (press pillow) on the lower platen to even out pressure over seams
- For zipper areas, open the zip and fold the zipper tape flat before pressing
- For pocket seams, turn the garment and use a press pillow sized to fill the pocket cavity
Protecting Heat-Sensitive Fabrics with a Teflon Sheet
Polyester and nylon fabrics can scorch, discolour, or develop a sheen if the direct heat of the press contacts the exposed fabric around the transfer. Always use a Teflon (PTFE) coated sheet or silicone release sheet between the upper platen and any exposed polyester fabric during pressing. This is particularly important for bright or light-coloured polyester garments where heat marks are immediately visible.
