How Screen Printing Works: Step by Step
Screen printing is a stencil-based printing process. Each colour in a design requires its own screen (stencil), through which ink is pushed onto the garment using a squeegee. Here is the complete process:
- Artwork preparation: Your design is separated into individual colour layers — one layer per screen. Each colour layer is output as a film positive (a clear film with the design printed in solid black).
- Screen preparation: A mesh screen (typically polyester or nylon mesh stretched over an aluminium frame) is coated with light-sensitive photo emulsion and dried in a dark environment.
- Screen exposure: The film positive is placed over the emulsion-coated screen and exposed to a strong UV light source (exposure unit). The UV light hardens the emulsion in the exposed areas, while the areas blocked by the black design on the film remain soft.
- Screen washing: The soft (unexposed) emulsion is washed out with water, leaving open mesh areas in the shape of your design through which ink will pass.
- Printing: The prepared screen is placed on the printing table. Ink is applied to one end of the screen, and a squeegee is drawn firmly across the screen, pushing ink through the open mesh areas onto the garment below.
