Fast-Reference Troubleshooting for Uganda’s Heat Press Operators
This guide is designed to be practical and direct: when something goes wrong with your heat press transfer, you need to identify the cause and fix it quickly — not read a textbook. The problems and solutions below cover 95% of all heat press transfer failures encountered by printing businesses in Uganda.
Problem: Transfer Peeling After Washing
The most reported heat press complaint in Uganda. The design looks perfect immediately after pressing but peels off partially or fully after the first few washes.
Causes and fixes:
- Temperature too low — The adhesive did not fully melt and bond with the fabric fibres. Increase temperature by 5–10°C and retest on a fresh garment
- Time too short — Increase pressing time by 3–5 seconds
- Pressure too light — The adhesive did not penetrate the fabric weave. Increase pressure by half a turn on the adjustment knob
- Wrong fabric/transfer combination — Some DTF powders are not compatible with certain synthetic fabrics. Verify compatibility or try a different powder/film supplier
- Garment washed at too-high temperature — DTF and HTV garments must be washed in cold or warm water (max 40°C). Hot water washes loosen the adhesive bond. Advise clients accordingly
Problem: Transfer Cracking When Fabric Is Flexed
The design cracks and breaks when the garment is stretched or flexed — particularly common on athletic wear and form-fitting garments.
Causes and fixes:
- Standard HTV on stretch fabric — Standard vinyl does not flex. Replace with stretch/stretchable HTV for athletic and lycra-based fabrics
- DTF powder incompatible with stretch — Standard hot-melt powder is rigid when cured. Use soft-hand DTF powder formulated for stretch fabrics
- Over-pressed DTF — Too much heat or time makes the adhesive brittle. Reduce temperature by 5–8°C
- Old or degraded transfer film — Expired DTF film or vinyl that has been improperly stored (humidity, heat) becomes brittle. Replace consumables
Problem: Incomplete Transfer (Patches Not Adhering)
Most of the design transfers correctly but certain areas show white patches where the fabric shows through.
Causes and fixes:
- Cold spots in the heating platen — The areas that did not transfer correspond to cold spots. Map your platen with an infrared thermometer. If confirmed, the element needs replacement or the machine needs servicing
- Uneven foam pad — Compressed areas of the lower foam pad result in less pressure in those zones. Replace the foam pad
- Garment not lying flat — Seams, pockets, or bunched fabric create pressure-void areas. Use a press pillow to compensate for uneven garment surfaces
- DTF powder not evenly distributed — Uneven powder application during DTF production leaves adhesive-free areas. Check powder shaker calibration and DTF production process
Problem: Scorch Marks or Fabric Discolouration
The fabric shows dark marks, shininess, or discolouration around or under the pressed design.
Causes and fixes:
- Temperature too high — Reduce temperature immediately. Synthetic fabrics (polyester, nylon) are particularly susceptible to heat damage above 170°C
- Pressing too long — Reduce pressing time
- No Teflon sheet on polyester — Always use a Teflon cover sheet when pressing polyester or nylon garments to protect exposed fabric from direct platen contact
- Machine temperature is higher than displayed — Verify with infrared thermometer. If actual is 20°C higher than displayed, recalibrate the controller or replace the thermocouple
Problem: Sublimation Ghosting (Double Image)
The sublimation print shows a shadow or double image offset from the main design.
Causes and fixes:
- Paper moved during pressing — Tape all four sides of the sublimation paper to the substrate with heat-resistant tape before pressing. Never rely on tape on just one side
- Garment shifted when press closed — Use a consistent garment loading technique; consider using a heat-resistant spray tack on the transfer paper back
- Design peeled while still hot — Peel sublimation paper after the garment cools slightly to room temperature to reduce movement during peeling
Problem: HTV Carrier Sheet Won’t Peel Clean
The carrier sheet tears or leaves residue, or the design partially lifts with the carrier when peeling.
Causes and fixes:
- Peeling at wrong temperature — Hot-peel vinyl must be peeled immediately while hot; cold-peel vinyl must be cooled first. Identify your vinyl type and peel accordingly
- Under-pressed — The adhesive has not fully bonded, so it sticks more to the carrier than the fabric. Increase temperature or time and press again
- Vinyl has expired or been stored poorly — Old vinyl loses adhesive integrity. Replace with fresh vinyl
Problem: Mug Press Colour Fading or White Patches
Sublimated mugs have washed-out colours, incomplete transfer, or white patches in certain areas.
Causes and fixes:
- Paper not in full contact with mug surface — Rewrap the mug more tightly; ensure zero air gaps between paper and mug surface before taping
- Temperature too low — Increase mug press temperature to 198°C
- Time too short — Mug sublimation requires 180–240 seconds. Do not reduce time below 180 seconds for 11oz mugs
- Mug is not sublimation-coated — Only pre-coated sublimation mugs accept sublimation ink. Standard uncoated ceramic mugs will not sublimate
Problem: Transfer Looks Good but Feels Plasticky / Stiff
The visual result is acceptable but the transfer area feels rigid, heavy, or uncomfortable on the garment.
Causes and fixes:
- DTF powder layer too thick — This is a production issue, not a press issue. The DTF powder shaker applied too much adhesive powder. Adjust powder application in production
- Over-pressed HTV — Excessive pressure drives HTV too deep into fabric, making it stiff. Use lighter pressure
- Wrong DTF powder for fabric type — Use soft-hand DTF powder for garments where hand feel matters. Standard hot-melt powder produces a stiffer feel than soft-hand formulations
