Why Correct Settings are Everything in Heat Press Work
A heat press transfer has three variables: temperature, time, and pressure. Get all three right and you get a perfectly bonded, durable, vibrant transfer every time. Get any one wrong and you will have peeling transfers, scorched fabric, washed-out colours, or incomplete adhesion. Most transfer failures in heat press work in Uganda come not from poor equipment but from incorrect settings — either wrong values or an uncalibrated machine.

Understanding the Three Pressing Variables
Temperature
The temperature at which the transfer material’s adhesive or dye activates. Too low: incomplete transfer and peeling. Too high: scorched fabric, discolouration, and bubbling. Temperature is set in °C on the machine’s digital controller.
Time
Duration of the press cycle. Too short: incomplete adhesion, partial transfer. Too long: over-pressing, fabric damage, ghosting in sublimation. Time is set in seconds on the countdown timer.
Pressure
The force applied between the two platens. Pressure is typically set on a dial or knob and rated as light, medium, or firm. Too little pressure: transfer doesn’t adhere fully. Too much pressure: flattens fabric texture, damages foam pads, and can cause HTV to bleed at edges.

Why Your Heat Press Temperature May Be Wrong
Most entry-level heat presses sold in Uganda are not calibrated at the factory. The displayed temperature may be 10°C to 30°C different from the actual surface temperature. Always verify your machine’s actual surface temperature with an infrared thermometer (available in Kampala’s electronics stores for UGX 30,000–80,000) before relying on displayed settings. If your machine reads 165°C but the actual surface is 145°C, your transfers will consistently under-press.
