Heat Transfer Vinyl and the Heat Press in Uganda
Heat transfer vinyl (HTV) is a pressure-sensitive film with a heat-activated adhesive backing and a carrier sheet. You cut the design on a vinyl cutter, weed away the negative space (the parts you don’t want), and press the vinyl onto the garment using a heat press. The result is a clean, solid-colour or specialty-finish design bonded to the fabric.
HTV remains widely used in Uganda for simpler, single-colour or limited-colour designs — particularly text-based designs, corporate logos, and team names — where the cost per unit is lower than full-colour DTF printing and the sharp, clean-edge look of vinyl is preferred.
Types of HTV Used in Uganda
Standard Smooth HTV (PU Vinyl)
The most common HTV in Uganda. Polyurethane-based smooth vinyl with consistent colour and durability. Works on cotton, poly, and blended fabrics. The baseline HTV for everyday T-shirt and bag decoration.

Glitter HTV
Embedded metallic glitter particles in the vinyl film. Popular for personalised women’s and children’s garments, wedding event shirts, and fashion items. Slightly thicker than standard HTV; requires longer press time.

Flock HTV
Velvet-textured vinyl with a soft, raised felt-like surface. Produces a premium, tactile result popular for logos on polo shirts, corporate workwear, and sports kits. Requires cold peel to preserve the velvet surface.

Reflective HTV
Retro-reflective vinyl that glows brightly when hit with direct light (headlights, flash). Used for safety and workwear applications — construction company shirts, security guard uniforms, and cycling gear. Highly durable.

Foil / Metallic HTV
Mirror-finish metallic vinyl in gold, silver, rose gold, copper, and holographic finishes. Very popular for premium fashion applications, event t-shirts, and brand-forward designs. Requires lower temperature and shorter time than standard HTV — over-pressing burns the metallic finish.

Stretch / Stretchable HTV
Specifically formulated for high-stretch athletic fabrics — sports jerseys, cycling kit, swimwear, and leggings. Standard HTV cracks and peels on stretch fabrics; stretch HTV moves with the fabric without breaking.

Step-by-Step HTV Application Process
- Design and cut — Create your design, mirror it horizontally in your cutting software, and cut on the vinyl cutter. The cut goes through the vinyl layer but not the carrier sheet (this is called a kiss cut)
- Weed — Use a weeding tool to remove the unwanted portions of the vinyl, leaving only your design on the carrier sheet
- Pre-press the garment — Press the blank garment for 3–5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles
- Position the design — Place the weeded vinyl (design side down, carrier sheet up) on the garment in the correct position
- Press — Close the heat press for the specified temperature and time
- Peel — Open the press and peel the carrier sheet according to the vinyl type (warm or cold peel)
- Final press (optional) — Cover the design with a Teflon sheet and press again for 5 seconds to ensure full adhesion
Layering Multiple HTV Colours
Multi-colour HTV designs are created by pressing multiple layers of vinyl. Key rules for layering:
- Press each colour layer for slightly reduced time (10 seconds instead of 15) — the total heat exposure across all layers provides the full bonding
- Press from the bottom layer up — first colour goes first, subsequent colours layer on top
- Use a Teflon sheet when pressing subsequent layers over already-pressed vinyl to prevent the previous layer from re-activating or lifting
- Maximum recommended layers: 3–4. More than 4 layers of vinyl creates a rigid, uncomfortable print area
HTV Care Instructions for Clients
Always advise clients buying HTV-decorated garments:
- Turn garment inside out before washing
- Wash in cold water, gentle cycle
- Do not tumble dry at high heat — causes HTV to peel
- Do not iron directly over the vinyl design — iron inside out or use a pressing cloth
