Uganda’s Growing Textile and Fashion Industry Needs Printing Equipment
Uganda has a significant and growing textile and fashion industry. From the thriving second-hand clothes market (mitumba) to homegrown fashion labels, school uniform manufacturers, and sports kit producers, the demand for fabric printing across Uganda is substantial. New trends — including personalised fashion, branded sportswear, and locally designed chitenge print applications — are creating fresh opportunities for textile printing businesses.
This guide covers the main fabric printing technologies available in Uganda, the equipment involved, what fabrics each technology works on, and the best market opportunities for each.
Technology 1: Sublimation Printing for Fabrics
How it Works on Fabric
Sublimation printing embeds dye directly into polyester fibres using heat and pressure. The design is printed onto sublimation transfer paper, then heat-pressed onto the fabric. The dye converts to a gas that bonds permanently with polyester molecules. The result is a permanent, vibrant, full-colour print that does not fade, crack, or peel even after hundreds of washes.
Fabric Compatibility
Sublimation only works on polyester fabrics (or fabrics with at least 60% polyester content). Cotton fabrics do not accept sublimation dye. This limits the technology to sports jerseys, performance wear, swimwear, cycling kit, and polyester-based fashion items.
Equipment and Cost
- A3 or A4 sublimation printer: UGX 1,500,000 – UGX 4,000,000
- Wide-format sublimation printer (for roll fabric): UGX 15,000,000 – UGX 40,000,000
- Heat press or calender heat roller: UGX 1,200,000 – UGX 8,000,000
Best Markets in Uganda
- Football and netball kit production for school leagues and local clubs
- Corporate sports day kits
- Cycling club jersey production
- Swimming team wear
Technology 2: DTF Printing for Fabric
How it Works on Fabric
DTF (Direct-to-Film) prints a design onto a special PET film, applies hot-melt adhesive powder, cures it, and then heat-transfers the finished film onto any fabric. Unlike sublimation, DTF works on cotton, polyester, nylon, denim, canvas, and blended fabrics equally well. This makes it the most versatile fabric printing technology currently available in Uganda.
Equipment and Cost
- A3 DTF printer + powder shaker + curing oven: UGX 8,000,000 – UGX 15,000,000
- Roll-to-roll DTF printer (for high volume): UGX 15,000,000 – UGX 30,000,000
- Heat press: UGX 1,200,000 – UGX 3,000,000
Best Markets in Uganda
- Custom t-shirt printing for any fabric
- School and corporate uniform branding
- Event merchandise — walk t-shirts, fundraising shirts
- Fashion labels wanting small-run custom prints
Technology 3: Screen Printing on Fabric
How it Works
Screen printing uses a stencil (screen) and squeegee to push ink through a mesh onto the fabric. Each colour requires a separate screen. It is most cost-effective for large runs of identical designs — 50 pieces and above — where setup costs are amortised across many units.
Equipment and Cost
- Manual screen printing press (4 colour, 2 station): UGX 5,000,000 – UGX 10,000,000
- Automatic screen printing press: UGX 18,000,000 – UGX 45,000,000
- Screen exposure unit, dryer, and chemicals: UGX 3,000,000 – UGX 8,000,000
Best Markets in Uganda
- Bulk uniform production for schools (hundreds of identical shirts)
- Political campaign t-shirts (mass volume)
- FMCG promotional shirts for product launches
Which Fabric Printing Technology is Right for Uganda in 2026?
| Technology | Best For | Minimum Volume | Investment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sublimation | Polyester sports kits | 1 piece | Medium |
| DTF | Any fabric, any volume | 1 piece | Medium |
| Screen Printing | Bulk identical designs | 50+ pieces | Medium–High |
For Most New Businesses, Start with DTF
DTF’s versatility across fabric types and order sizes makes it the recommended starting point for a fabric printing business in Uganda. It requires less setup time per job than screen printing and works across a wider range of fabrics than sublimation. Add sublimation when you start getting large sports kit orders, and screen printing when bulk uniform contracts demand it.
